Ichthyopedia: A Biographical Dictionary of Ichthyologists

About

Co-authored by Theodore W. Pietsch and William D. Anderson, Jr., Ichthyopedia was published by the American Philosophical Society in 2023. The book contains about 1,500 biographical sketches of those who have added to our knowledge of the science of ichthyology, as well as 100 pages of references and 254 black and white portraits.

Ichthyopedia can be purchased from Diane Publishing Co. Eventually, an electronic version will be made available online.

Acknowledgments

We [Pietsch & Anderson] have been inspired by Kraig Adler’s efforts in producing his multi-volume set on the history of herpetology (Adler, 1989, 2007, 2012, 2014). David G. Smith provided us with citations for obituaries that have appeared in Copeia [now Ichthyology & Herpetology] and Tim M. Berra provided us with references. Special thanks go to Marie-Louise Bauchot, Jacques Daget, and Roland Bauchot (1997) for providing a wealth of biographical information on French ichthyologists; and to Brian Saunders whose book Discovery of Australia’s Fishes (2012) has been a most useful source of information. Others who provided information include Wyatt W. Anderson, Christopher B. Boyko, Peter Castro, Prosanta Chakrabarty, Bruce B. Collette, Oliver Crimmen, William N. Eschmeyer, Ronald Fricke, Christine Marie Gutherz,

Eric J. Hilton, Tomio Iwamoto, Glenna B. Kinard, J. Andrés López, William B. Ludt, Keiichi Matsuura, Alexei Orlov, Lynne R. Parenti, Richard L. Pyle, Helen Randall, Adela Y. Roa-Varón, Robert H. Robins, Norma Salcedo, W. Leo Smith, William F. Smith-Vaniz, Melanie L. J. Stiassny, and James D. Williams. We have made extensive use of Wikipedia and cited it where appropriate. Drafts of the manuscript were read by Eric J. Hilton, Lynne R. Parenti, David G. Smith, William F. Smith-Vaniz, and Lester D. Stephens. From among the latter, all of whom offered much-appreciated constructive feedback, we must single out David G. Smith for the huge effort he made to read every word and comment in exhaustive detail. Finally, we thank our wives, Diane M. Rubiano and Barbara S. Anderson, for their support and encouragement.
