About the Standard Symbolic Codes

The Standard Symbolic Codes for Institutional Resource Collections in Herpetology & Ichthyology are available as a file download (version 7.1, see below) or an online database (version 6.5).

The list includes codes for historical and modern natural history collections associated with lost and extant specimens of fossil and Recent fishes, amphibians and reptiles. The next version of this list will be published in Copeia in 2020.

Please send additions, corrections and updates, however minor, to Mark Sabaj at sabaj [at] ansp.org. Equally welcome is confirmation that a particular abbreviation remains in current use or disuse.

The most current list (version 7.1) can be downloaded below as PDF or Excel file, the latter for sorting with additional worksheets providing lists of personal communications and literature cited.

The current list should be cited as:
